Hydrogen SEO Review (2026): We Tested Our Sister Product Honestly
An honest Hydrogen SEO review from its sister product: install, free features, the Hydrogen AI agent, benchmark results, pricing, cons and a scorecard.
Hydrogen SEO is a genuinely lightweight, genuinely free WordPress SEO plugin with the only plain-language SEO agent we have seen inside wp-admin, and it is Beta software that has not yet earned the years of trust Yoast or Rank Math have. Our verdict: a strong choice for anyone who wants every core SEO feature without an account and is willing to trial a new plugin on staging, and the right choice if delegating SEO busywork to a supervised agent is what you are after. It is not the fastest plugin measured, it ships a heavy editor bundle, and it once shipped without a canonical tag.

What did we test and how?
We installed Hydrogen SEO 0.0.20 from the WordPress.org plugin directory on a clean test site, worked through the wizard, used every non-AI feature without creating an account, then connected a free hydrogenseo.com account to try the AI buttons and the Hydrogen AI agent. For performance we did not run our own timings; the plugin's maintainers publish a reproducible benchmark and we hold them to it.
How does installation and the setup wizard go?
Search, install, activate, and a two-step wizard opens. It asks for a name and email, both optional and behind a consent tick-box, and can be skipped entirely; nothing is sent if you leave the fields blank. That is a meaningfully lighter onboarding than plugins that gate their front-end output behind registration. Once in, the admin is a single React dashboard with its own sidebar rather than a sprawl of WordPress submenus. Heavy assets load on demand. The benchmark measured the dashboard HTML at 131.2 KB, within a kilobyte or two of The SEO Framework and Slim SEO and a quarter of All in One SEO's 511 KB.
What works free without an account?
Everything that is not AI, which is more than we expected:

What is the editor experience like?
In the block editor, Hydrogen SEO adds an SEO Settings sheet rather than a metabox below the content. The sheet holds the title and description fields with a live SERP preview, the Open Graph and X fields with share-card previews, robots and canonical controls, and the schema type for the post. Elementor and Divi are supported as well.
With an account connected, six fields get an AI button: SEO title, meta description, Open Graph title and description, and X title and description. Click one and you get several suggestions with character counts; pick one and it fills the field, which you can still edit. Nothing is written until you save the post. Field-level AI belongs beside the field, not on a separate page.
The second tab in the sheet is Hydrogen AI, scoped to the post you are editing, which brings us to the part that makes this plugin different.
How good is the Hydrogen AI agent?
Hydrogen AI takes jobs in plain language: "write meta descriptions for every post missing one", "add FAQ schema to this page", "find and fix broken internal links". It lives in the dashboard for site-wide work and in the editor sheet for per-post work. What it did well in our hands was the boring, bulk, verifiable work that no per-field button can touch: enumerating what is missing across a site and proposing fixes you then approve. Treat its drafts as drafts, exactly as you would a junior's.
The safety model is the reason we would let it near a real site. It works only through the plugin's own registered abilities under the WordPress Abilities API, 87 in the free plugin and 90 with Pro, so it cannot do anything the plugin itself cannot do. Before it can act at all you must switch on AI Abilities and connect it, and the abilities are locked to the domain they were enabled on and to users with manage_options. It asks before anything it cannot undo, shows every change it makes, and can be stopped mid-job. You choose the policy: confirm destructive changes only, confirm every write, or read-only. Authentication is a WordPress application password named Hydrogen SEO Agent, revocable from the plugin or from your profile, and the site key never reaches the browser. How fast is Hydrogen SEO, measured?
These rows come from the hydrogenseo.com benchmark re-run on 8 September 2026 (WordPress 7.1, PHP 8.2.27, MySQL 8.0.35, one plugin active at a time, median of 13 measured requests). Figures are cost added over a baseline install with no SEO plugin.

Honest placement: third on PHP time and third on memory, behind The SEO Framework and Slim SEO; second on queries and autoloaded options; tied for zero custom tables. It is not the fastest plugin, and our fastest WordPress SEO plugin piece says so. Where it did win was schema efficiency: ten JSON-LD types on a standard post in 2,071 bytes, against Yoast's twelve types in 3,976 bytes and Slim SEO's ten in 3,828. Its sitemap listed 72 URLs with 40 images and a lastmod on every one of the 72. All seven plugins added zero front-end files, so that claim is not a differentiator.
Then there is the canonical bug, which no honest review can skip. The first benchmark run found Hydrogen SEO 0.0.14 printed no canonical tag on posts, pages or archives, because it replaced core's canonical output and only the homepage got a replacement. Bare WordPress did better. The team published the result with the bug in the table, fixed it in 0.0.15 with one central canonical output and a per-page override, then in 0.0.18 cut its settings reads from seven extra queries to one and dropped 1.6 MB of source from the package. We rate the transparency highly and the bug's existence as exactly the kind of thing "Beta" is warning you about.
Can you import from another SEO plugin?
Yes, and this is the feature that makes trialling low-risk. Tools then Import SEO Data detects Rank Math (and PRO), Yoast SEO (and Premium), SureRank (and Business), All in One SEO (free and Pro), The SEO Framework, Slim SEO (and Pro) and SEOPress (and PRO). It brings over title and description templates, robots rules, homepage SEO, social defaults, knowledge graph, robots.txt, every per-post and per-term SEO field including canonicals and schema type, plus redirect rules. Smart tags are translated to Hydrogen variables. There is a dry-run preview, batches with pause and resume, undo from history, and nothing is deleted from the old plugin, which it can optionally deactivate for you. What does Hydrogen SEO cost?
The plugin is free and GPL licensed, and the hydrogenseo.com pricing page is refreshingly short. Free is $0 forever with 1,000 AI credits on signup. Pro is $99 a year (was $149) or $399 lifetime (was $599) with 20,000 credits a year, the Pro plugin and automatic updates. Max is $179 a year (was $249) or $799 lifetime (was $999) with 50,000 credits. One credit is one single-URL audit; alt text costs one, content two, image generation three. Plans differ in credits and sites, never in features. Pro adds bulk AI meta for up to 500 posts, schema autopilot, content scoring against a target query, and llms.txt and AEO monitoring inside wp-admin. When credits run out, only AI generation pauses.
What are the cons?
- Beta. The readme says so at the top and means it. Every feature is covered by automated tests, but there are no years of field testing across millions of odd sites. The canonical bug is the proof.
- A 700 KB editor bundle. Hydrogen SEO loads two files totalling 700.4 KB into the post editor, one of them a single React bundle. That is far lighter than Yoast (48 files, 4,160 KB) or Rank Math (24 files, 1,792 KB), but nine times The SEO Framework's 77.6 KB. It is admin-only and does not touch your visitors, but it is not lean.
- Not the fastest. Third on PHP time and memory. If you want the absolute minimum, The SEO Framework or Slim SEO measured lighter.
- AI needs an account. The agent and every AI button require a free hydrogenseo.com account and spend credits. The free 1,000 credits are generous for a small site and not for a large one.
Who is Hydrogen SEO for, and who should skip it?
For: site owners who want every core SEO feature free without an account; developers who care about zero custom tables and a REST-backed admin; anyone with a backlog of missing descriptions, alt text or schema who would rather delegate it to a supervised agent than click through it; and people who value a vendor that publishes its own losses.
Not for: sites that cannot tolerate Beta software; anyone whose only criterion is the lowest possible PHP cost (pick The SEO Framework); teams who need the richest default schema graph out of the box (Yoast printed twelve types); and people who are happy with what they run today, because a working setup you understand beats marginal gains.

For most sites, yes on features and yes on weight: it covers titles, meta, schema, sitemaps, robots, llms.txt, redirects, audits and previews, and adds 12.9 ms of PHP per request against Yoast's 39.0 ms and Rank Math's 36.1 ms in the hydrogenseo.com benchmark. The honest caveat is maturity. It is Beta software without years of field testing, so trial it on staging and use the import's dry run and undo.

No, not for anything except AI. Every non-AI feature works with no account and no key. Is the Hydrogen AI agent safe to run on a live site?
It is designed to be. The agent can only act through the plugin's 87 registered abilities, asks before anything it cannot undo, shows every change, can be stopped, and can be set to confirm every write or run read-only.
